Show and Tell
This is an opportunity to share something that you’re excited about (e.g., a paper, data set, outrageous social media post, or person) with a group of similarly minded pediatric medical decision making researchers. Show and tell is intended to be an informal session build camaraderie, learn about others’ research, and share interesting ideas; there’s nothing you need to prepare in advance or read. Come as you are! If you’re not feeling inspired to share, you’re welcome to attend and just listen.
Learn More >Virtual Short Course: Cohort Modeling in R. December 13, 10-1:30 ET.
Cohort state transition models (cSTM), often called Markov models, are frequently used to inform policy makers about how to allocate healthcare resources under constrained budgets. In thiscourse we will teach participants how to integrate different components of a cSTM within a single framework using R. We will first give a conceptual overview of cSTMs and the general structure for their implementation in a programming language. This will be followed by a brief review of good coding practices and how to structure your code in an efficient, transparent and reproducible way. We will demonstrate a cSTM in R, followed by hands-on exercises that will help participants implement a cSTM in R. We will also demonstrate how to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis(CEA)and how to calculate and visually present epidemiological and health economic outcomes using the cSTM. We will shortly cover the implementation of probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA)of a cSTM in R.
Learn More >Mt. Hood Diabetes Challenge Network
The next Mount Hood challenge meeting will be hosted by the Department of Medicine, University of Malaya. It will take place 4th and 5th of December in conjunction with Society for Medical Decision-Making meeting at Connexion Conference & Event Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (with Mt Hood/ SMDM workshops on 3rd of December).
Learn More >Virtual Short Course: Metamodeling for Simulation Based Optimization of Strategies in Health Care
This course will cover the basics of metamodeling using R software. Its added value, and the practical steps for developing and applying metamodels will be discussed and demonstrated. This includes the identification of metamodeling techniques, simulation of data for metamodel training/testing, metamodel fitting/validation, use of a metamodel for optimization, and result verification. A single case study is used in several hands-on exercises, using metamodels to optimize a screening program. R is used for all exercises and ready-to-use scripts are provided, to apply the presented concepts in practice.

Learn More >Virtual Short Course: Applied Health Economics. August 10, 10-1:30 ET.
This will be an introductory course that examines the application of economic principles to policy-relevant questions in the arena of health care. The course format will be a combination of lecture and discussion revolving around topical policy issues or other questions. The instructor will teach basic elements of economic evaluation sand an initial understanding of economic evaluations, introducing the logic of health care program evaluation in general, and the specific goals of economic evaluation.

Linking Research to Evidence-Based Action for Patients, Providers and Policy Decision Makers
Learn More >SMDM Virtual Course: Discrete Event Simulation in R to support healthcare decision making
About this course
This course covers all basic choices and methods required for developing and analyzing discrete event simulations (DES): The practical steps involved in modeling, different types of evidence that can be used, alternative approaches for handling competing events, and how to reflect different types of patient variation.
A single case study will be used in all exercises, extending a simple DES into a comprehensive model, including probabilistic analysis. R will be used and ready-to-use scripts will be provided. Exercise answers will be provided and participants will leave with a running DES model.
SMDM Tutorial Webinar: Calibration of a Microsimulation Model using Approximate Bayesian Computation
Microsimulation models (MSMs) make predictions by summarizing simulations at the level of individual units. MSMs are usually complex and incorporate a large number of parameters, many of which cannot be directly estimated from available data. Model calibration is the process of finding parameter values for which the MSMs output(s) fit to observed target data of interest. Calibration is especially helpful when derivation of the likelihood function is difficult or even impossible, as is often the case with complex predictive models. In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to implement a likelihood-free approach, the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), for calibrating MSMs. We will implement and compare the results from the ABC rejection-sampler, and the ABC Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm using as an example discrete time MSM for dementia. We will also provide practical recommendations for certain aspects of the calibration process (e.g., number of microsimulations needed, selection of parameters to calibrate, approaches for predicting outcomes of interest, stopping rules, assessment and visualization of the results, etc.), and R code for implementing the ABC algorithm.
