Virtual Short Course: Cohort Modeling in R

December 13, 10-1:30 ET

Cohort state transition models (cSTM), often called Markov models, are frequently used to inform policy makers about how to allocate healthcare resources under constrained budgets. In thiscourse we will teach participants how to integrate different components of a cSTM within a single framework using R. We will first give a conceptual overview of cSTMs and the general structure for their implementation in a programming language. This will be followed by a brief review of good coding practices and how to structure your code in an efficient, transparent and reproducible way. We will demonstrate a cSTM in R, followed by hands-on exercises that will help participants implement a cSTM in R. We will also demonstrate how to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis(CEA)and how to calculate and visually present epidemiological and health economic outcomes using the cSTM. We will shortly cover the implementation of probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA)of a cSTM in R.

Mt. Hood Diabetes Challenge Network

The next Mount Hood challenge meeting will be hosted by the Department of Medicine, University of Malaya. It will take place 4th and 5th of December in conjunction with Society for Medical Decision-Making meeting at Connexion Conference & Event Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (with Mt Hood/ SMDM workshops on 3rd of December).

The early bird registration deadline has been extended until Friday 8th of September 2023, to assist those arranging conference bookings who might still be on a summer break.

The final deadline for late-breaking abstracts is 22nd September 2023. If you would like to submit a late-breaking abstract, please do so as soon as possible, as only a few slots are available. For details on how to submit, see: https://www.mthooddiabeteschallenge.com/abstracts

So far, 30 abstracts have been accepted for oral presentation at the conference and details of these presentations can be accessed here:  https://www.mthooddiabeteschallenge.com/about-4 .

Challenge sessions will involve a range of diabetes simulation modelling groups from Europe, North America and Asia and have new participants from Canada and the Netherlands.

As with past Mt Hood Diabetes Challenge meetings, the conference aims to promote the use of health economics and simulation models with a special focus on developing and using diabetes simulation models within Asia.

The conference will take place 4th and 5th of December at Connexion Conference & Event Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (with Mt Hood/ SMDM workshops on 3rd of December).

The first day of the meeting will be devoted to diabetes simulation modelling, including an Asian-focused simulation modelling challenge. The second day will have a broader health economic/ decision science focus and discuss how health economists in other diseases can emulate and build on the activities of the Mt Hood network with diabetes simulation modelling.

The meeting will include a combination of:
  • set Mt Hood-style challenges are undertaken by groups who have developed simulation models;
  • presentations by groups simulation models or undertaking related health economic work;
  • abstract sessions covering health economics, simulation modelling and decision science.
  • Those attending the conference can attend the conference dinner on Monday 4th December.

Workshops and masterclasses will be held on Sunday 3rd of December 2023.
