Socialize at SMDM: Networking Receptions, Dinners, and the Social Event
Sunday, October 19, 2014
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Trainee Lunch
Ticket fee is $5.00 USD. Limited seating available.
This is a wonderful opportunity for trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows) attending the meeting to meet and talk informally with each other and with senior members of the Society. The lunch is held on the first day of the meeting so that these conversations can continue over the course of the meeting
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM: New Member and First Time Attendee Reception
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Welcome Reception for All Attendees
The New Member and First Time Attendee Reception will provide opportunities for those new to SMDM to meet each other and SMDM leaders. Our goal is to help new members and first time conference attendees get the most out of their experience with SMDM and the Annual Meeting. Please join us for an informal orientation, where you will meet members of the Board, Chairs of the interest groups, gain insight into how our meeting operates, and receive help in identifying the sessions that are a good fit for you. Special tables will be set up for interest groups and regional communities to meet and help new members find their niche in the Society. This is a must attend event for new attendees.
The Welcome Reception for all attendees will immediately follow. This gathering will formally kick off the Annual Meeting with our first Poster presentation session. Come for hors d'ouevres and plenty of time to catch up with colleagues.
8:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Women in SMDM: Advancing Careers, Impact, and Happiness
This event will offer opportunities for networking and connecting with friends and colleagues. This year’s focus will be on how to respond well to the question, "What have you been up to lately?" Women often have difficulty "bragging" about themselves, so we will discuss methods for describing your recent achievements and research quickly and without sounding "braggy".
A number of SMDM women have read Peggy Klaus' book, Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing it (http://www.peggyklaus.com/books/order-peggy-klaus-books), and have found it helpful. We will use this book as the basis of our discussion. Please join us!

7:30 AM - 8:30 AM & 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Interest Group Meetings
Interest Groups are formed by members of SMDM who wish to network with medical decision researchers with similar research interests. Groups schedule in-person meetings during SMDM meetings and use SMDM Connect for online discussions, information sharing, and networking throughout the year. This is the perfect opportunity to join a new interest group, connect with researchers who share your interests, and find your niche in the Society.
Don't belong to an interest group yet? Stop by the Sunday evening welcome reception to meet with representatives of each interest group and plan which meetings you'd like to attend. Learn more about SMDM's interest groups
Interest groups will meet during breakfast and lunch breaks on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. A full lineup of each group's meeting time will be available in the program book onsite and posted in the online agenda in the weeks preceeding the meeting.
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Globetrotting - Exploring International Career Paths
Interested in expanding your international connections? Working or training abroad? In this year’s career panel discussion, SMDM members will share their insights and experiences on career paths in global health, international mobility, identifying good projects, building strong collaborators, and navigating multiple stakeholders. Introductions from panelists will be followed by a question and answer discussion with the audience. Panelists are the SMDM Annual Meeting Keynote speaker, Damien Walker, a health economist from the Gates Foundation; Tania Laurenco, former SMDM-AHRQ post-doctoral fellow and currently the Coordinator for Angola’s National Public Health Strategic Plan 2025; Emily Burger, PhD student at the University of Oslo, Norway and visiting scholar at the Harvard School of Public Health; Fernando Alarid, former faculty at Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health/Mexican School of Public Health and currently a PhD student at the University of Minnesota; and Anushua Sinha from Rutgers University whose research focuses on economic evaluation in low and middle income countries.
