SMDM members have been receiving an alarming number of emails supposedly from our president. These come from a variety of email addresses, including some that include SMDM in the name. If you receive anything suspicious, please disregard. Reach out to us if you are unsure. Here are a few steps to protect yourself:
- Always look at the From email address. Even if SMDM is in the name, if it ends with @aol.com or @gmail.com or another general provider, those are not legitimate. Random numbers and letters are also not legitimate emails for our society.
- SMDM financial policies do not allow us to request that anyone spend money on our behalf to be reimbursed later.
- SMDM will not reach out to ask you to provide financial support or assist a fellow member directly.
- We will not reach out with “urgent” financial requests.
- Many details, including fellow member names and leadership, can be pulled from our website by hackers. Accurate details alone do not verify the email.
- Do not click on any links in suspicious emails.
Stay safe!
