About this Event
6-9 June, 2027: Join us in Toronto for SMDM’s 49th Annual Meeting as we explore universal, sustainable, patient-centred healthcare through better decision making.
The meeting will bring together 300-500 scholars, clinicians, public health policy makers, trainees, students, and early career researchers dedicated to advancing medical decision making. It will feature short courses, oral sessions, symposia, clinician focused sessions, poster presentations, and the prestigious Lee B. Lusted Student Prize Competition. Expand your professional network by connecting with colleagues throughout the event!
- Universality is fundamental to the Canadian philosophy that access to health care is a human right, that access to medical care should not be driven by ability to pay, and that as a community we are taking care of each other in our most difficult moments. How we allocate resources in a human rights model of healthcare is an important responsibility of SMDM type people.
- Sustainability speaks to the economic feasibility, health economics, and judicious use of limited financial and human resources.
- Patient-Centred speaks to the ideal that the patient’s care, values, and needs are the focus within their own healthcare. The front-line delivery of health care should be about shared decision making and whole-person, personalized, trauma-informed care. But, for that to be true on the front-lines, that has to be embedded in all levels of the system and bureaucracies struggle to center these types of ideals.
Doing all three of these things is a constant struggle creating real and existential or moral challenges at all levels of decision making.
